CHAPTER 14

제 14 장

Of the way of light,
a summary of what a Christian is to do, that he may be happy forever.
빛의 길에 대하여,
영원한 행복을 얻기 위해 기독교도들이 해야 할 행동에 대한 요약

And thus, I trust, I have declared to you as much,
and with as great simplicity as I could,
those things which make for your salvation,
so as not to have omitted anything that might be requisite thereto.
지금까지 나는 여러분들이 구원을 받기 위해서
여러분 자신들이 해야만 할 일들에 대해
제가 할 수 있는 한 최대한으로 알아듣기 쉽도록 언명하였으며,
구원에 이르기 위한 필요 불가결한 사항을 어느 하나 빠짐없이,
충분하게 밝혔다고 믿습니다.

For should I speak further of the things that now are,
and of those that are to come, you would not yet understand them,
seeing they lie in parables.

What I have said will suffice as to these things.
왜냐하면 내가 미래의 일들과 일어나고 있는 일들에 대해
지금 더 이야기 한다하더라도, 그 비유 속에 숨겨져 있는 것들을
여러분들은 아직 이해하지 못할 것이기 때문입니다.
그러므로 그런 일들에 대해서는 내가 앞서 말한 것만으로도 충분합니다.

Parables can both reveal and conceal;
compare with Christ's remark to his disciples:
"And he said unto them,
Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God:
but unto them that are without,

all [these] things are done in parables;
That seeing they may see, and not perceive;
and hearing they may hear, and not understand;
lest at any time they should be converted,
and [their] sins should be forgiven them. (Mark 13:11, 12)
예수가 그의 제자들과 나눈 드러난 것과 드러나지 않은 비유 :
예수께서 이렇게 대답하셨다.

"너희에게는 하늘 나라의 비밀을 아는 것을 허락해 주셨지만,

내가 그들에게 비유로 말하는 이유는,
그들이 보아도 보지 못하고, 들어도 듣지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못하기 때문이다.
이사야의 예언이 그들에게서 이루어지는 것이다.
'너희가 듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못하고, 보기는 보아도 알아보지 못할 것이다.
이 백성의 마음이 무디어지고 귀가 먹고 눈이 감기어 있다.
이는 그들로 하여금 눈으로 보지 못하게 하고 귀로 듣지 못하게 하고
마음으로 깨닫지 못하게 하고 돌아서지 못하게 하여,
내가 그들을 고쳐 주지 않으려는 것이다.'
(마태복음 13장 11-12절)

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, [is] come,
he will guide you into all truth... and he will shew you things to come."
(John 16:13);
그러나 그분 곧 진리의 영이 오시면,
그가 너희를 모든 진리 가운데로 인도하실 것이다.
그는 자기 마음대로 말씀하지 않으시고, 듣는 것만 일러주실 것이요,
앞으로 올 일들을 너희에게 알려 주실 것이다.

"But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost,
whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things,
and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26);
그러나 보혜사, 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령께서,
너희에게 모든 것을 가르쳐 주실 것이며,
또 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하실 것이다.
(요한복음 14장 26절)

"Which things also we speak,
not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth,
but which the Holy Ghost teacheth;
comparing spiritual things with spiritual."
(1 Corinthians 2:13);
우리가 이 선물들을 말하되, 사람의 지혜에서 배운 말로 하지 아니하고,
성령께서 가르쳐 주시는 말로 합니다.
다시 말하면, 신령한 것을 가지고 신령한 것을 설명하는 것입니다.

"But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you,
and ye need not that any man teach you,
but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things,
and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you,
ye shall abide in him." (1 John 2:27)
여러분으로 말하자면, 그가 기름 부어 주신 것이 여러분 속에 머물러 있으니,
여러분은 아무에게서도 가르침을 받을 필요가 없습니다.
그가 기름 부어 주신 것이 여러분에게 모든 것을 가르쳐 줍니다.
그리고 그 가르침은 참이요, 거짓이 아닙니다.
여러분은 그 가르침대로 언제나 그리스도 안에 머물러 있으십시오.

Let us now go on to the other kind of knowledge and doctrine.
There are two ways of doctrine and power:
the one of light, the other of darkness.
자 이제 다른 종류의 지식과 교리(敎理)로 넘어갑시다.
교리와 힘에는 두 가지 길, 즉 빛의 길과 어둠의 길이 있습니다.

But there is a great deal of difference between these two ways;
for over one are appointed the angels of God,

the leaders of the way of light; over the other, the angels of Satan.
And the one is the Lord from everlasting to everlasting;
the other is the prince of the time of unrighteousness.
하지만 이 두 길 사이에는 아주 큰 차이가 있습니다.
왜냐하면 하나의 길은 빛의 길을 이끄는 지도자로서
하나님의 천사들이 사람들을 다스리도록 지명되었고,
어둠의 길은 사탄의 천사들이 지도자들로 다스리기 때문입니다.
그리고 빛의 길은 영원에서 영원으로 이어지는 주님의 길이고
그 외에 다른 어둠의 길은 불의의 시간의 왕자인 사탄의 길입니다.

5.

Now the way of light is this:
if any one desires to attain to the place that is appointed for him,
he will hasten there by his works.
And the knowledge that has been given to us for walking in it,

is to this effect: You must love him that made you;
you must glorify him that has redeemed you from death.
자. 이제 빛의 길에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.
만일 어떤 사람이 그에게 마련된 곳을 얻고자 한다면,
그 사람은 자신의 행동으로 그곳에 가기를 서둘러야 한다는 것입니다.
그리고 그 길 속을 걷기 위해서는 이러한 노력들을 해야만 한다는 것이
우리에게 주어진 지식입니다.
당신은 당신을 만드신 그 분을 사랑해야만 합니다.
당신은 당신을 죽음으로부터 구원한 그 분을 찬양해야만 합니다.

You must be simple in heart, and rich in the spirit.
You must not unite to those that walk in the way of death.
You must hate to do anything that is not pleasing to God.
You must abhor all dissimulation.
You must not neglect any of the commands of the Lord.
마음이 순수하고, 정신이 풍요로워야 합니다.
죽음의 길 속을 걷는 사람들과 함께 하지 말아야 합니다.
하나님을 기쁘게 하는 행위 외에는 그 어떤 것도 좋아하지 말아야 합니다.
위선적인 모든 것들을 싫어해야만 합니다.
주님이 명하신 그 어떤 말씀들도 소홀히 하지 말아야 합니다.

You must not exalt yourself, but must be humble.
You must not take honor to yourself.
You must not enter into any wicked counsel against your neighbor.
You must not be over- confident in your heart.
자신을 높이지 말고 겸손해지십시오.
자신에 대한 명예를 추구하지 마십시오.
이웃을 적대시하는 그 어떤 사악한 감정도 품지 마십시오.
마음 속으로 자만하지 마십시오.

You must not commit fornication nor adultery.
Neither must you corrupt yourself with mankind.
You must not make use of the word of God to any impurity.
간통이나 간음하지 마십시오.
동성애로 자신을 더럽히지 마십시오.
하나님의 말씀을 그 어떤 불순한 의도로도 사용하지 마십시오.

You must not accept any man's person, when you reprove anyone's faults.
You must be gentle. You must be quiet.
You must tremble at the words which you have heard.
You must not keep any hatred in your heart against your brother.
You must not entertain any doubt whether it will be or not.
어떤 사람의 잘못에 대해 꾸짖을 때 차별을 두지 마십시오.
온화하고 조용한 사람이 되십시오.
어떤 말을 들었을 때는 그 말에 공감하는 사람이 되십시오.
형제를 적대하는 그 어떤 마음도 마음 속으로 품지 마십시오.
될 것이다 안 될 것이다 하는 의심을 미리 품지 마십시오.

10.

You must not take the name of the Lord in vain.
You must love your neighbor above your own soul.
거룩한 주님의 이름을 쓸데없이 들먹거리지 말아야 합니다.
이웃을 자기 자신의 영혼보다 더 사랑하십시오.

11.

You must not destroy your conceptions before they are brought forth,
nor kill them after they are born.
임신한 태어날 아기나 갓 태어난 아기를 죽이지 마십시오.

Apparently abortion and infanticide were sufficiently common
to warrant this exhortation.
이 훈계는 아마 낙태와 영아살해를 매우 엄중히 경계하는 언급인 것 같다.

12.

You must not withdraw your hand from your son, or from your daughter,
but will teach them from their youth the fear of the Lord.
당신의 아들과 딸을 방치하지 말고 어릴 때부터 잘 가르쳐
주님을 공경하고 두려워하는 사람으로 자라나게 해야만 합니다.

13.

You must not covet your neighbor's goods, neither must you be greedy.
Neither must your heart be joined to proud men,
but you must be counted among the righteous and the lowly.
Whatever events will happen to you, you must receive them as good.
이웃의 재산을 탐내지도 말고 이웃을 착취하지도 말아야 합니다.
가진 자들의 거만한 마음을 맞추어 주려고 아부하지 말고,
오히려 정직하고 검소한 사람들을 믿고 그들과 어울려 살아가십시오.
당신에게 그 어떠한 일이 일어나더라도 기꺼이 받아들이십시오.

14.

You must not be double-minded, or double-tongued,
for a double tongue is the snare of death.
You must be subject in fear and reverence to the Lord,
and to inferior masters as to the representatives of God.
두 마음을 가지지 말고 한 입으로 두가지 말을 하는 사람이 되지 마십시오.
왜냐하면 한 입으로 두가지 말을 하는 것은 죽음의 올가미이기 때문입니다.
주님을 경배하고 두려워하며 주님께 복종하십시오.
그리고 이 세상의 부족한 지도자들을 하나님의 대리인으로 여기십시오.

By "inferior masters," probably is meant the lowest order of clergy,
the deacons, as contrasted with the presbyters, or priests.
여기서 부족한 지도자들이란, 참다운 목사들이나 사제들과 대비하여
수준 낮은 가르침을 펴는 성직자, 집사들을 지도를 의미하는 것으로 여겨진다.

15.

You must not be bitter when ordering any of your servants who trust in God,
for fear that you may not fear him who is over both;
because he came not to call any with respect of persons,
but whomever the Spirit had prepared.
하나님을 믿는 그대가 고용하고 있는 어떤 사람들에게도
너무 가혹한 지시를 내리지 마십시오.
왜냐하면 너희를 다스리는 하나님을
네가 두려워하지 않을까 염려스럽기 때문입니다.
그리고 그 분께서는 사람들에게 그 어떤 차별도 두지 않고
그 어느 누구든 영혼이 준비된 사람을 부르기 위해 오셨기 때문입니다.

16.

You must communicate to your neighbor of all you have;
you must not call anything your own,
for if you share in such things as are incorruptible,
how much more should you do it in those that are corruptible?
네가 가진 모든 것을 이웃과 나누고,
그 무엇이든 너의 소유라고 주장하지 마십시오.
왜냐하면, 만일 당신이 영원히 썩지 않는
하나님의 사업에 참여하려고 한다면,
썩어 없어질 것들을 이웃과 나누어 쓰지 못할 이유가 어디에 있겠습니까?

17.

You must not be too eager to speak,
for the mouth is the trap of death.
Strive for your soul with all your might.
Do not reach out your hand to receive,
and then withhold it when you should give.
남들 앞에 서서 쓸데없이 너무 열을 내서 말하지 마십시오.
왜냐하면 입은 죽음의 덫이기 때문입니다.
온 마음을 다해 그대의 영혼을 얻기 위해 분투하십시오.
얻기 위해서 그대의 손을 내밀지 말고,
주어야 할 때는 손을 움켜지지 마십시오.

18.

You must love, as the apple of your eye, everyone
that speaks to you the word of the Lord.
Call to your remembrance, day and night, the future judgment.
그대에게 주님의 말씀을 전해주는 모든 사람들을
자신이 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않을 만큼 사랑하는 사람같이 사랑하십시오.
그대에게 닥쳐 올 미래의 심판을 밤낮으로 기억하고 잊지 마십시오.

19.

You must seek out every day the persons of the righteous,
and both consider and go about to exhort others by the word,
and meditate how you may save a soul.
늘 정직하고 올바른 사람들을 찾아다니고, 더불어 어떻게 하면
다른 이들을 말로 올바른 길로 이끌 것인가 하는 생각을 염두에 두십시오.

20.

You must also labor with your hands to give to the poor,
so that your sins may be forgiven you.
You must not deliberate whether you should give,
nor, having given, complain about it.
가난한 이를 도와주기 위해 그대의 손으로 땀흘려 일하십시오.
그러면 그대는 자신의 죄를 용서받을 수 있을 것입니다.
무엇을 나누어 줄 것인가에 대해 망설이지 말고,
주었다면 이미 준 것에 대해 아까워하며 불평하지 마십시오.

21.

Give to every one that asks,
so will you know who is the good rewarder of your gifts.
달라고 하는 모든 사람들에게 베풀어 주십시오.
그러면 당신은 선물들을 되갚아 주시는 선한 그 분을 알게 될 것입니다.

22.

Keep what you have received;
you must neither add to it nor take from it.
받은 것들을 잘 간직하십시오.
그리고 그것에 더하지도 말고 거기서 빼내지도 마십시오.

23.

Let the wicked be always your aversion.
You must judge righteous judgment.
You must never cause divisions, but make peace between those
that are at variance, and bring them together.
늘 사악한 무리들을 멀리하십시오.
항상 정직하고 올바른 판단을 내리십시오.
사람들 사이를 분열시키지 말고,
다투는 사람들 사이에는 평화를 가져와
그들이 모두 하나가 되게 하는 그런 사람이 되십시오.

24.

You must confess your sins
and not come to your prayer with an evil conscience.
그대의 죄들을 고백하고
그대가 악한 생각들로 가득 차 있을 때는 기도하러 오지 마십시오.

25.

This is the way of light.
이것이 빛의 길인 것입니다.

CHAPTER 15
제 15 장

Of the way of darkness, that is,

what kind of persons will forever be cast out of the kingdom of God.
어둠의 길에 대하여, 이 길은 어떤 종류의 사람들이
하나님의 나라로부터 영원히 추방될 것인지에 대한 언급이다.
